We are very proud and excited to present you 'Shieldwall', the first ever Victrix/Pillage mini magazine.

What is Shieldwall?!

Shieldwall a mini-mag that takes a deep-dive into the Pillage universe and Victrix Miniatures.

You'll find Pillage/Victrix news, new releases, and even teasers of our upcoming kits (and games!), as well as original scenarios for Pillage, terrain tutorials for your gaming tables, battle reports, painting tutorials for our miniatures, interviews, historical articles, and much more!

This first issue is a pilot, to gauge the community's interest in this type of project, who knows, maybe it can become an 'actual' magazine in the future?

The goal is to create a link between the Victrix community and all our projects... Enjoy!

Who are the new Wiglaf characters?

From Dan Mersey, author and owner of Wiglaf Miniatures:

• My mounted Arthur the Many-Faced Hero has a shield displaying the cross he was said to have

carried for three days and three nights at the Battle of Badon. He is a legendary hero wearing an

antique helmet (the Roman Ribchester helmet) that disguises his historical identity or lack

thereof, riding his horse Llamrei, and wielding his sword Caledfwlch. We had some fun with

Arthur, wanting to make him stand out and be a little bit mythical and mystical (read my books!).

• Beowulf the Dragon-Slayer was the most famous hero of early English literature. This model’s

armour makes him usable as a Vendel Culture warlord in addition to being the slayer of mythical

monsters. Historically grounded fantasy inspired our model of this fictional hero.

• The Eponymous Wiglaf is Mark Copplestone’s interpretation of my Wiglaf Miniatures logo

(which is based on one of the Torslunda plates from the Vendel period) and the model is usable

as a Vendel Culture warlord or as Beowulf’s brave companion. As with Beowulf, this model is a

bit of speculative fun for a fictional hero.

• The Harpole Lady was a real person, unlike many characters in this set. I believe this is the first

time she has been represented in miniature. More speculatively this model could represent the

wife of Raedwald, telling him to go forth and protect Edwin. Find out more about the Harpole

• The Chastising Celtic Saint’s crozier is based on the earliest-known Irish examples, and his hair is

our interpretation of the much-debated Celtic tonsure. This model could be one of many fire and

brimstone types from Welsh and Irish literature, and he might well be admonishing Arthur.

• The Hooded Monk can be used as a standard bearer for Christian warlords such as Oswald or

Cadwallon. Wearing the hood up means he can be Roman Church, Celtic Church, or something

far more mysterious. He could carry a standard using the flag-topper cross from PEN07.

• The Welsh-styled Performing Bard cradles a crwth or lyre, and is singing or proclaiming with a

heroic gesture. The lyre is based on the Sutton Hoo reconstruction; at this date, the crwth did

not have a fingerboard and was plucked rather than played with a bow. He could represent

Aneirin, the legendary Taliesin, or any number of lesser performers.

Wiglaf Miniatures is run by Daniel Mersey and specializes in producing 18mm metal wargaming miniatures for the British Dark Ages (or Early Medieval Period). The models are sculpted by Mark Copplestone in a similar style to his fantasy Barbarica range.

Wiglaf Miniatures’ first release is The Age of Penda: Seventh Century AD Anglo-Saxons. This range is designed for the wars of Mercia and her enemies, and will expand to include other leaders, Vendel Culture warriors, Welsh and Irish warriors, and cavalry.

Wiglaf Miniatures aims to produce sculpts that are historically accurate and evocative of the period. There’s a balanced mix of armoured and unarmoured warriors, and we have researched costume and appearance across a wide range of sources. The Anglo-Saxon range is based on what is known of their costume in the seventh century AD. Shields are scaled to around 70cm and helmets are based on the known British Isles examples from the surrounding centuries (Sutton Hoo, Benty Grange, Pioneer, Shorwell, Coppergate, Staffordshire). We’ve modelled some shield decorations onto the wealthiest warriors, ensured our warriors carry a seax, and named the leaders after some of our favourite warlords from the period.

Please note that you’ll need to supply spears and standards for open-handed miniatures, but shields are cast on. Models listed as “assorted poses” are supplied as a random mix from those shown.

Victrix Early Saxons

 "Early Saxon Warriors!

Here we have some renders of the Early Saxons we have been working on. These show the warriors on the main frame, this will be followed by a command frame and an armoured warriors set.

These represent the Early Saxons, Jutes, Angles and Danes (all grouped together under the title Saxon) that invaded Britain (or possibly this was more of a migration) during the 4th to 6th centuries. 

As well as fighting the Late Romans they were also hired by the Romans fighting as mercenaries and they fought the Romano British for dominance for hundreds of years, forcing the original inhabitants of Britain West and North.

Early Saxons tended to use a smaller round shield for parrying and punching with. They would deliver a charge, hurling javelins as they ran towards the enemy and closed with spear, sword, axe or Seax. Shield wall tactics came in later.

These figures can easily be used as other Dark age Germanic warriors and even be mixed with later Saxons and Vikings. Figures from the Late Romans sets would not look out of place alongside these in a warband. All adding massive amounts of variety to our ever expanding Dark age range. "

" Late Roman Cataphracts - Coming along nicely!

Here we have the first completed cataphract rider. This rider has two arm pose options, levelled Kontos and upright Kontos. He has 3 head options and 2 face mask options. He has a sword and optional axe as sidearms. He is shown riding 4 of the horse variants.

Still lots for renders to share over the next month. We will finish sculpting the cataphracts in around 3 weeks and then off to layup and then tooling.

Exciting news from Victrix

 Late Roman Armoured Cavalry - Out Now!

After the huge success of the recent Late Roman Armoured Infantry release, we are pleased to say that the heavy cavalry can now join them on the battle field...

This fantastic set of miniatures represents Roman heavy cavalry in mail and scale armour during the 4th to 6th Centuries.

There are many and varied head and arm options with spears, javelins and swords plus standard bearer and musician arms. We have some cloaks to make your command figures stand out from the troopers.

There are two sizes of shields, a large oval S1 and a smaller oval S2 as historical reference seems to depict two sizes in use by Late Roman heavy cavalry.

The versatility that we try and build into all Victrix sets means you can use all the heads from the previous Late Roman infantry giving you even more variety and you could also easily use these models as Romano British and Goth cavalry simply by adding the appropriate head, shield or cloaks.

You can use the new cavalry transfer sheets or you can also use the previous Late Roman, Byzantine, Goth and Romano British transfers on the larger oval shields.

Late Roman Armoured Infantry: Now Available to Pre-order!

The wait is finally over!

We are really pleased to announce that our Late Roman armoured infantry set is now on release. 

This incredibly versatile set comes with 3 different sprues, allowing you to make Late Romans of the 4th to 6th Century, Goth/Germanic warriors, Arthurians and Early Byzantines.

You get 5 x Main frames which comprise of 4 x bodies wearing mail armour and 2 x bodies wearing scale armour (30 armoured warriors). A fantastic mix of weapon and shield arms which include various spear types including Angons and swords, axes and throwing darts. There are a mixture of 6 x round and 6 x large oval shields plus some extra cloaks and separate sword scabbards.

We have made a separate head frame for the main frame warriors which contains 42 heads with extra plumes, crests and some long hair attachments to make Roman, Goth or Arthurian warriors.

There is 1 x command frame which has 6 armoured figures. 2 in mail, 2 in scale, 1 in breastplate and 1 in mail and breastplate plus another 13 head variants, musician arms and extra cloaks, scabbards and standard bearer arms.

It is fully supported by a large range of LBMS shield transfers and there are plenty of Late Roman cavalry on the way, including the heavy and light cavalry, Horse archers and Cataphracts.

I suppose it is a bit tricky getting hold of these. Also although you can get plastic Picts getting Anglo-Saxon troops from the earlier period might be a problem.
